Alias the Lone Wolf edition by Louis Joseph Vance Politics Social Sciences eBooks
Unlike the previous novel in this series (The Red Masquerade) this installment has Michael Lanyard front and center once again. He has cut his ties to the British Secret Service now and decides to wander aimlessly around Southern France for time. To the surprise of neither the reader nor Lanyard himself however, he stumbles into dangerous circumstances even out in the countryside. The Lone Wolf is about forty now but women still seem to find him as irresistible as ever (it's mutual, fortunately). One of those females is victimized by a criminal organization and Lanyard sets out to right that wrong. The trail takes him from Paris, to Cherbourg, and then across the Atlantic on a ship filled with rogues and, yes, a beautiful woman. This sea voyage drags on a bit too long for me but concludes in a very satisfying manner with what might be considered the Lone Wolf's finest moment. Well, one of them certainly. Alias the Lone Wolf edition by Louis Joseph Vance Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
I have enjoyed each of the lone wolf stories I have read. They are well written, exciting tales. Not pulp. The plots are interesting, not easily seen through. Enjoy.
Naturally, being of its time, the prose seems stylistically dated, but the book was well-done when done, and taken on its own terms stands well the test of time for a mystery-thriller. The anti-hero thief turned lawful adventurer-spy works and is a precursor to The Saint and others who later followed similar trails. Sometimes it takes a thief, doesn't it?
